AI Is Here. Why AI Will Be More Impactful Than the Internet

Coins with a line graph over them.

AI is here.

After years of hyperbole, investment, and experimental pilot programs using legacy architecture, we can say with certainty that AI is here. AI is now delivering real value to corporations, governments, and organizations globally and at scale. The data is clear. 28% of organizations, which is 7X as many as in the past three years, already report that they have AI in place and are achieving high deployments and high outcomes as a result. By one estimate, AI could contribute $15.7 Trillion to the global economy in the next decade. Clearly, AI is here.

Corporate investment in AI technology reflects that market opportunity. According to the AI Index report, corporate investment in AI grew from $119.54 billion in 2020 to $176.47 billion in 2021. Academia saw the same trend. According to the same report, one out of every five Computer Science PhD graduates in 2020 specialized in AI/ML. Clearly, AI is here.

AI, and in particular the subcategory known as deep learning, promises better decision making and insights. With deep learning, businesses will uncover new opportunities and markets, scientists will make faster discoveries, and doctors will prescribe better cures enabling us to live longer, healthier lives. No area of our lives will be untouched by this technology.

AI is here. Are you ready?

Ushering in that new era is a combination of deep learning, ever larger models driving a need to scale resources, and revolutionary solutions that are purpose built for AI.  These technologies will make it possible for organizations to make better decisions in less time, to discover new opportunities, accelerate time to market, unlock new revenue, and boost efficiency.

These new technologies require a new way of processing data. The legacy instruction set architectures (ISA) found in CPU and GPU based systems are not efficient enough for the age of deep learning. They process data kernel by kernel, resulting in excess context switching and data movement. They require complex, proprietary coding languages to modify AI models to run across hundreds or even thousands of GPUs, the parallelization of which requires its own complex and costly configuration. A new solution is required.

There is a solution. It’s here at SambaNova.
