SambaNova Joins NAIRR pilot program to support strategic national AI research initiative

Written by SambaNova Systems | January 24, 2024

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an engine of innovation that is driving scientific discovery and economic growth. To drive progress and breakthroughs, researchers often require access to costly, state-of-the-art data and technologies. The federally managed National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) will galvanize AI research through broadening access to AI technologies. As a leader in generative AI, SambaNova is excited to be part of the NAIRR pilot program.

Jennifer Glore, Vice President of Public Sector at SambaNova Systems said, “The NAIRR Pilot collaboration between the NSF, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and SambaNova Systems will bring broad access to groundbreaking AI resources and enhance US competitiveness. Together, we are unlocking the potential for diverse researchers to drive innovation, ensuring that the benefits of AI are accessible to all.”

Generative AI holds great promise for every individual, organization, and nation. It has the potential to help solve some of society’s most pressing challenges, such as fighting disease, discovering new sources of energy, and mitigating climate change. As with all new technologies, responsible exploration, experimentation, and use is essential. That is why the US Government issued Executive Order 14110 on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. The goals of the Executive Order include bringing together broad resources from across the private sector, government agencies, academia, and more to create a national AI infrastructure that can be used to build and develop AI resources and systems, in a safe and transparent manner.

As a first step, the National Science Foundation (NSF), along with a number of other agencies and in accordance with the Executive Order, launched the NAIRR pilot.

Before now, it has been a challenge to democratize access to AI as the massive datasets and large scale computational resources required are primarily found only within the largest research labs, the most well funded universities, and a select few hyperscalers. The NAIRR is a plan to develop a national infrastructure that connects U.S. researchers to the hardware, software, data, models, and training resources they need for AI research.

The collaborative nature of the NAIRR pilot is intended to promote cross-sector partnerships. Industry collaboration can lead to the development of commercially viable AI applications and solutions, fostering economic growth by creating new markets and revenue streams. Current government partners include:

U.S. National Science Foundation.  (NSF)

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

U.S Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)

US Patent and Trade Office (USPTO)

Department of Defense (DOD)
